Instant Pot 101

I'm going to address a few basic questions about the Instant Pot.

Q. What is an Instant Pot?
A. An Instant Pot is a kitchen appliance that does the job of 7 other appliances. Most commonly I use the pressure cooker function. However, it is also is a slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, yogurt cooker, browning/saute pan, and warming pan.

Q. Is the Instant Pot dangerous?
A. Not when it's used correctly following all manufacturer instructions.

Q. Can I really cook meat from frozen quickly?
A. Yes you can!

Q. Why would I use an Instant Pot when I can just cook it on the stovetop?
A. With the Instant Pot there is no hovering or constant stirring. You can put it in and step away.

Q. Is there only 1 kind of Instant Pot?
A. No. There are multiple models, and new ones are released often. Some models are specific to certain stores such as Wal-Mart. Here is a link to the comparison guide: Which Instant Pot model is right for you? Comparison Guide

Q. Do I have to use water when I cook with the instant pot?
A. Yes you have to add water to all recipes. At least 1 cup. It can not create pressure without liquid.

Q. Can I use milk instead of water.
A. No. Milk will burn.

Here are a few more tips and tricks to help you pick the right Instant Pot for you.

If you are struggling to decide if you should buy the 8qt or 6qt, buy the 8qt. You can always put less in an 8qt but you can't put more in a 6qt.

The GEM Instant pot is NOT a pressure cooker. It is more like a crock pot with a few more options but it is not a pressure cooker.

Don't give up if your first meal is not successful.

ALWAYS read the manufacturer instructions and follow them.
